Fabric Consumption Calculation for Woven Shirt

Fabric Consumption Calculation Method for Woven Shirt:

In garments trade, Consumption and Costing is the primary requisition for a merchandiser. Fabric cost bears approximately 40%-45% of the total cost of any garment. So, the calculation of correct fabric consumption is very important to achieve the maximum profit from an order. In this article, I will show a useful method which is vastly applied in calculation fabric consumption calculation of woven shirt.

Fabric consumption calculation method for the woven shirt:

A garments merchandiser should identify each part of a “woven long sleeve shirt” before starting the consumption calculation.

parts of long sleeve woven shirt

Parts of long sleeve woven shirt

Normally, a “woven long sleeve shirt” consists of the following parts-

  1. Body parts (Body Length + Chest width),
  2. Sleeve,
  3. Collar,
  4. Cuff,
  5. Collar Band,
  6. Pocket,
  7. Yoke.

Suppose,
The buyer “GAP” forwards a “woven long sleeve shirt” item order (10000pcs) to you with the following specification.

Follow the below measurement chart:
Now, find the required fabric consumption for the order.

Solution:
The consumption method for the above order will be discussed below in part by part.

Let,
Fabric width- 55”
Wastage-10%

1. Fabric consumption for the Body Parts (Body + Chest):
Here, we will apply the following formula (per dozen),

(Note: 2.54 used to convert into inch from cm and 36 used to convert into yds from inch).

2. Fabric consumption for the Sleeve:
Here, we will apply the following formula (per dozen),

3. Fabric consumption for the Collar:
Here, we will apply the following formula (per dozen),

4. Fabric consumption for the Cuff:
Here, we will apply the following formula (per dozen),

5. Consumption for the Collar Band:
Here, we will apply the following formula (per dozen),

6. Consumption for the Pocket:
Here, we will apply the following formula (per dozen),

7. Consumption for the Yoke:
Here, we will apply the following formula (per dozen),

Now,

Total fabric consumption for the woven long sleeve shirt is-

= [{Number (1) + Number (2) +Number (3) +Number (4) +Number (5) +Number (6) +Number (7)} + Wastage%]

= {(6.40 + 3.76 + 0.66 + 0.14 + 0.25 + 0.29 + 1.17) + 10%}

= (12.67 + 10%) per dozen.

= 13.94yds per dozen.

So, total fabric consumption for the woven long sleeve shirts is 13.94yds per dozen.

And,

Total fabric consumption for 10000pcs (833.33 dozen) woven long sleeve shirts is (13.94 × 833.33) = 11616.62yds.

      Dear……….
i have already 15+ times mentioned that this article is only for an example that how we should calculate……….

      Thanks for your comment……….@Jonaid

Brother, in order to convert cm square to feet square, we have to divide the figure by 6.45( Since this is area)
I guess that is why your consumption has yielded that high since you divide by 2.54 only.

Fabric consumption for the Body Parts (Body + Chest):
Here, we will apply the following formula (per dozen),

Where is calculation part above all consumption? How did we find Total consumption without calculation? See below..

Total fabric consumption for the woven long sleeve shirt is-

          = [{Number (1) + Number (2) +Number (3) +Number (4) +Number (5) +Number (6) +Number (7)} + Wastage%]

          = {(6.40 + 3.76 + 0.66 + 0.14 + 0.25 + 0.29 + 1.17) + 10%}

          Please hope for best reply..

    hi!
i wonder what is the practical value of a calculation without realistic figures? there are plenty of calculations in the web which are correct, so this is only time wasting.
the tricks everybody wants to know is how the safe fabric with better cutting efficiency, not the mats.

    • Mayedul

My only target is to show the method that how we should calculate………..
I think, if u know the method, then u can complete any types of consumption………..
      Anyway thanks for your comment……….

Sir, There is a little mistake in the formula, Because Square inch(55″ * 36″) can not be multiplied by a single 2.54 cm. It should be multiplied by (2.54 * 2.54). That is, you should have written (55 * 36 * 2.54 * 2.54). Then you will also get the correct answer. Everything is perfect except that mistake. Your posts helped me a lot. I saved all the posts of yours and made a pdf book with index. Now I am waiting for your next post. Thanks a lot. keep it up.

    Hi All

I am in confused. Because of back yoke calculation. Already taken body length including yoke. So that may be no need yoke consumption once again or some things different calculation. Can you clarify please,

    Thanks//Shameem

    • Php

The yoke is cut in 2 main yoke and the under yoke.
Body length includes the main yoke and the under yoke is than calculated.

  • Elwood

You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but
I find this matter to be really something which I think I
would never understand. It seems too coplex and extremely broad for me.
I am loloking forward for your next post, I will try
to get the hang of it!

  • Jenny

Can you please tell why 12 is taken in formula 1-7 ?

  • Manuel

Wow, that’s what I was looking for, what a material!

  • Adrianne

I do agree with all of the ideas you have introduced to your post.
They are very convincing and can certainly work.
Still, the posts are too short for starters. Could you please extend them a little from next time?
    Thanks for the post.

  • JOTHIMURUGAN

    FOB meaning sir?

  • abbas ali

you have used two times used 2.54 opt-1 used for convert co to inch , another one used 2.54 why, pls explain, I will benefited👍

  • Md.Amir

    why 2.54 is double here?

  • Ayaz Siddiqui

It is no doubt a v nice try, it is appreciating, but I have 2 questions.
    1)
normally we first calculate fabric width and then calculate gross ( consumption of fabric for a garment), then, we knit or purchase the fabric with the required width. but you just supposed the width; I mean there should be some method to calculate the width of the fabric, which is, therefore, the first step.

    2) you did not use GSM of the fabric, although it is used in fabric consumption calculation.
    Please clarify my questions.
any body are welcome to answer.
    Regards,

  • ashik biswas

very nice .pls upload here knitting yarn consupton
